Here's a guide for the PvP Tavern, on the topic of dueling. This will be the first dueling guide, and I think it will help a lot of big-shot stakers that do armor duels.
I've been dueling for a while now, and I noticed that a LOT of the higher-level melee stakers are missing something. No, it's not their family dinners, because they stopped caring about those after pledging their lives to the duel arena. I'm talking Vesta's Armor!!
Having Torva armor is great, but you also need Vesta's armor if you plan on doing melee staking with armor turned on.
Why Shad? Is it because Rebecca Black has endorsed Torva Armor? Nope, it's because your momma thinks you're handsome in Vesta's armor. And it's because the Vesta's Armor high crush-defense bonus.
As you can see from the above image of the Vesta chainbody and plateskirt bonuses, the armor set has a total crush bonus of +257.
The torva platebody and platelegs (stats shown in above image) provide a crush bonus of +215. That means the Vesta gear provides 20% more defense to crush attacks. TWENTY PERCENT?!? That's 10 times more than the average interest rate for US savings accounts these days! Whoa!
So why is the crush defense bonus such a big deal? It's important because most higher-level melee stakers have a Chaotic Maul. *OOO, AAA* The Chaotic Maul is generally accepted as the HIGHEST D.P.S (damage per second) weapon in the game, and it functions as a CRUSH weapon! So if you have armor that will make you 20% more resistant to these crush attacks (cough, Vesta's armor), then you'd be a silly Corp Beast not to use a set!
You might also be wondering... What about the +400 LP (life point) bonus that comes with the Torva armor set? The only way you get the +400 LP boost is if you are wearing the armor before the duel starts. If your opponent sees you in Torva armor, he's most likely not going to duel you. Even if they agree to duel with you Torva armor, they will request that you equip it after the duel starts so that you don't start off with an unfair +400 LP.
For this reason, the +400 LP boost becomes ineffective. So clearly, the +400 LP isn't going to do anything for you when your opponent pulls out a Chaotic Maul, because your opponent is going to be too smart to let you get that 400 LP boost. That makes the Vesta Armor the clear choice when your opponent is using a crush-style weapon such as the Chaotic Maul.
So if you are doing melee only duels with big stakes, make sure you pack yourself some Vesta's Armor to keep in your inventory. You never know what weapon your opponent may pull out (that's what she said).
