Runescape Giant Mole Guide

Giant Mole Guide

Author: George

The dark undergrounds of Falador houses an extensive system of tunnels and underground caves. It's said that these undergrounds are inhabited by a Giant Mole creature that burrows around in the dark. Many brave adventurers set out to kill the Giant Mole either for thrill-seeking purposes, or to claim the treasures that it drops upon it's death.

This is a great way to have some excitement and make a good ammount of gold. But will you be able to kill the creature, or will it kill you? This guide will teach you the things you need to know in order to go after this ellusive creature and claim (and possibly even kick) some booty!

Requirements:

60+ Combat for group
80+ Combat for solo

Quest

There are no quests that have to be done but slug menace is helpful for proselyte.

Getting There

Dig on any of the holes in Falador Park to go to mole caves

The mole cave

Mole Killing Tactics

There a three most common ways to kill the mole: dharocking , melee-praying and range. I use the melee-prayer way because it’s the fastest and cheapest way.

Melee-Prayer

This is my favorite way. You use two prayer pots soloing it and about a dose in a group. The mole hits high but when you use the protect from melee prayer he never hits you, and if he does hit you it’s a two or three. Just know that it's a lot better then getting hit 20s or 21s and having to constantly eat if you are getting hit. The best method for soloing the mole using this method is if you use a Whip, DDS, Rune or proselyte .
Melee-Prayer inventory

Dharocking

Get yourself to low HP by killing something before hand with no weapons. Get to around 30hp or 25hp. I would only recommend higher if you have a good defense level because the mole can hit 21's on you if you aren't using protect from melee. Dharocking is used for killing the mole in a few hits to keep from digging. The best I've seen is killing the mole in one dig using this method. It's best if you have high defense and high strength levels. The weapons used are dds and full dharocks for this method. Make sure you have good food for this method!
Dharocking Inventory

Ranging

This is a good method as well. To do it, you can hit high with a rune crossbow and you can also use a effect if you are using a bolt with an enchantment. The best bolts are ruby and up. Another good reason to use range is because it allows you to hide in a safe spot while killing the mole. So you can kill without being touched, meaning food consumption is low. When using this method, use rune c bow and the best Dragon Hide you can wear.

Ranging inventory

How to kill the mole without it digging

D clawing: This is the only method I know that can kill the mole without it digging but this takes 99 strength and attack + d claws and strength pots. Other than that, it is very simple. You spec the mole with the d claws until it dies. For this method you need to be very fast at pressing the spec bar (which has a limited use). The same inventory is used as the melee prayer but you replace the prayer pots are replaced with super strength and attack pots.

Killing the Giant Mole

Find the mole in the cave, and turn on the Protect From Melee prayer. You should keep prayer on for the first part of the fight, using prayer potions when you need to. When you hit the mole, use your dragon dagger's spec until you use out the whole bar. Hopefully, the mole will become poisoned (if you are using d clawing method use d claw spec). After this, switch to your method. Around halfway through, it will burrow in to the ground, splattering you with mud and possibly extinguishing your light source (bringing a covered light source like a lantern will prevent this from happening).

Now the mole is hiding somewhere in the caves. You will have to find it, and try to get as much damage on it before it digs again. After you hit it, you will probably only get two or three hits on it, so try to make them count. If you have any special, you can try to hit your special on it before it burrows. The mole may burrow a couple squares away, or across the tunnels. You do not need to pray, as the mole won't get a lot of hits on you, but you may if you aren't that strong of a player. You will do a lot of running. If you need to, recharge your energy by drinking a super energy potion, using an explorer's ring, or just walk. If you managed to poison the mole, the poison will damage it, so you may also want to look for a red dot on your minimap.

Killing With a Team

Another way you could kill the mole is by bringing a friend (or a couple friends), and acting as a team. You would bring standard equipment. It is recommended that you use a clan chat on a Lootshare world. This way you can split the drops, and you can talk through the chat. You will usually kill the mole faster and use less money and gear but receive lower amounts cash.

The person with the highest Prayer Points and Hitpoints should attack the mole first, and turn on protect from melee. The mole will attack him, so the rest of the team does not need prayer potions. They should mainly have energy, attack, and strength potions. You could have one prayer potion in your inventory, just for those little times you get it alone.

Mole Drops

Here is an example of what the mole drops:

The mole has a 100% drop of either some mole claws or skins. You can trade these to Wyson for some nests, which will contain either rings or some seeds. You can farm or sell the seeds, and crush the nests with a Pestle and Mortar you can get yew seeds (see mole collecting methods for ways to make cash). You can sell them or make them in to Saradomin's Brew (you need 81 herboler to make saradomin brews)

List of Possible Drops

  • Iron arrows
  • Amulet of strength
  • Air runes (105)
  • Yew Logs (100)
  • Dragon medium helmet
  • Dragon Spear
  • Green, Crimson, gold charms (2)
  • Sharks
  • Blood Runes(15)
  • Mithril Platebody
  • Mole Claw
  • Big Bones
  • Mole Skin
  • Rune Battleaxe

As you can see, there is a good potential to make money off the moles. They have some good drops, but the mole claws can mainly be traded for nests which give out good items such as Yew Seeds.

Hints & Tips

  • The mole is weak to stab attacks, which is an attack style on your Dragon Dagger if you brought one.
  • If there is someone already killing the mole, then switch worlds. Don't steal their mole.
  • If you are running low on supplies, you can poison the mole, and then run behind a safespot, such as a stalagmite. This way the mole won't hit you, and will die of poison.
  • The mole can hit up into the 20s, so using prayer and food is advised.
  • Use a bullseye lantern, candles make it too dark and you won't need a tinderbox.
  • It's always useful to have a teleport out. You could bring a one click tele like an ectophial (obtained from the Ghost Ahoy quest), or make sure your glory amulet has at least one charge.
  • Summoning can be very efficient at the Giant Mole. You could restore your run energy with some familiars, such as the Spirit Terrorbird, or hold your items. A very good use is that, when a familiar attacks the mole, and the mole burrows, your familiar will follow it. This means that it will lead you in the general direction of the mole.
  • If you poison the mole, it is possible it will burrow. If you are using Lootshare, this could mean your team is out of reach being in Lootshare. If you are using lootshare and the mole is poisoned, you may want to get it down to low health, then safespot it so you all can get the drops.
  • Another cheap alternative is to bring a weapon (along with spade, light, etc) and fight the mole and use prayer against it. When you die, just get a spade and light from the bank, and run in to the caves (make sure your respawn point is in Falador though).
Closing Thoughts

Hope you have a great time killing the mole for cash or just for fun!
