Making steel bars is a classic method used to make money. Its well known through out Runescape for its ease, profits, and smelting experience. For this method, the only requirement is level 30 Smithing (this requirement can be easily reached by doing "The Knight's Sword" Quest). Not only is this good training, but it's also one of the best ways to get from the 400k-500k range all the way to your first MILLION GP!



To start off, you need to obtain the ores necessary to make 1000 Steel Bars. You can either buy the ores (a LOT faster, more expensive, less profits) or mine the ores (a LOT slower, free, more profits, mining experience).


I would recommend just buying the ores, because in the time it takes to mine the ores, you could already do the method multiple times because of its speed, and as a result, gain more GP.

The method itself is very simple. Go to the Grand Exchange and buy 1000 Iron Ores and 2000 Coal Ores. Your expenses should come out to a total of about 500K.

However, if you don't have the money to buy the ores, or if you just want some mining experience, you could always mine the ores.

Now, here's the great part about this method. Once you smelt all the ores, you will have 1000 Steel Bars. A steel bar can sell for 900 GP EACH!! So how much GP will you end up with?

1000 Steel Bars x 900 GP Each = 900,000 GP !!

That's almost 1 MILLION GP!!

Now whether you mine the ores or buy them, you've got to smelt them. Store all the ores into your bank and head over to the desert city of Al-Kharid, located east of Lumbride if you are a free player (you need 10 gp to pass the toll gate that encloses Al-Kharid) or or the smelting place north of Edgeville Bank if you're a member.

Once you are there, head to the bank and wear light-weight equipment that would make it easy to run around (or better yet, wear no equipment!). If you are a member, try wearing things that decrease your weight, such as Boots of Lightness, Spotted/Spottier Cape, and Penance Gloves.

Withdraw 9 Iron Ores from your bank and 18 Coal Ores (or just select "Withdraw All" for Coal)

Then follow the path in the picture shown below to get from the bank to the smelting place.

Upon arrival, just click on the furnace or right-click the furnace and select "smelt furnace"

A window will come up on the chat/dialouge area with pictures of different ores. Right click on the Steel Bar and select "Smelt 10 Steel" (even though you can only make 9 steel bars, pressing "Smelt 10 Steel" is easier than pressing make x, and then typing 9).

Your character will automatically smelt the bars, and your inventory will have 9 Steel Bars. Head back to the bank and store the bars, then repeat the process.

Continue repeating he process until you have smelted all the ores and have 1000 Steel Bars in your bank.

Congratulations! Now it's time to sell the bars! Let's pull up the profits table to see how much you will make:

Amount of Steel Bars x Price Each = Total Value

1000 x 900 GP = 900,000 GP!

That's almost a MILLION gold! Not only that, but you receive 17,500 Smithing EXP for every 1K bars you smelt.

Why stop this process when you reach 1 Million GP? You could repeat this process and make thousands of Steel Bars and be well on your way to making MILLIONs of GP! Did I mention you will rack hundreds of thousands of smithing exp along the way? Double cha-ching! Happy smelting!
