Make Money While Mining
Mining is a very important skill in Runescape, because of the many uses of metals. Very expensive things, such as armor and bars are made out of the Ores that miners mine, meaning ores are always in high demand and for a high price!
So how can you get started on becoming an expert miner and make a ton of money at the same time? Well, first locate what level mining you are below, and read on what you should do to keep getting your mining level up and make money along the way! If you are a first time miner, keep reading to learn how you start on the path to becoming an experienced and wealthy miner.
A miner can be defined as someone who mines the ores, stores the ores in the bank, and after accumulating enough ores, they sell the ores at the Grand Exchange. As a miner, you can accumulate great wealth while only having to focus on one skill, your mining. Since miners don't have to waste time smelting ores or smithing the bars, they can sell their ores and receive their money pretty quickly. Ores also sell for quite a bit of money, all the way up to Runite Ores going for 17,000 GP each! If this sounds like the path you wish to follow, here's the road you should go through.
Level 1-15 Mining:
First thing you want to know is how to attire while you go mining. Bank everything on you, and completely clear your inventory. Equip your pickaxe if you have the attack level for it, otherwise leave it in your invetory. At this stage, the only things that you can mine are copper and tin ores. The best place to mine them on a F2P world is at the mine south of Varrock.(see picture below)
Since you are not going to smith the tin and copper ores as a pure miner, its best you just mine copper, because it gives the same amount of exp and sells for more in the Grand Exchange.
Tin ores are 17.5 exp each, meaning you will need to mine 138 copper for level 15 mining and this should take about 20 minutes.
In the process you can make...
So you are looking at 14,628 GP... Eh, not bad. At least it will pay for the costs of buying the pickaxes. Don't worry, this money is only a small grain of sand in a vast beach of fortunes that await you.
Level 15-40 Mining:
You might have noticed that copper ores aren't always in high demand, but now you can mine iron ores, something that is always in HIGH demand. Iron ores are excellent for training your exp, and also sells for a nice amount on the Grand Exchange. Before you get started mining Iron Ores, you want to purchase a Mithril Pickaxe, and am Adamant Pickaxe (A Rune Pickaxe is good too if you can afford it). There are a few good places to train your mining, the best place to mine in a F2P world is the South-East Mine of Varrock. (See picture below)
Iron ores are 35 exp each, meaning you will need to mine 995 iron ores for level 40 mining and this should take about 3 hours.
In the process you can make...
... just by trying to get a higher mining level of 40!
Level 40-60 Mining:
If you haven't bought a Rune Pickaxe by now, it's advised that you do so with the money you received from mining and selling ores to this point. If you are just starting here, you could try mining iron or try some of the other money making methods on this website to get enough money for a Rune Pickaxe. However you come across one, it’s strongly advised you get one, as mining in these levels can get competitive.
Now it is true that you can mine coal at this point, and you can depending on what you want to do. If you want to get experience and level up quickly so you can enter the mining guild, you should mine iron. If you want to make good money along the way, its best that you start mining coal. Good coal areas for F2P are at Barbarian Village and at the Dwarven Mines, near the stairs that are close to the Falador East Bank.
Alternatives include mining gold and silver at the crafting guild then teleporting or simply walking back to Falador to bank your valuable ores. They give good exp, go around for quite a lot in the Grand Exchange, and can be mined quickly with a 40+ mining level.
Here are the amounts of each rock you will need to mine in order to obtain a mining level of 60. To get to level 60 mining it should take about 16 hours.
To reach a mining level of 60, you can mine...
6758 Iron
or...
5913 Silver
or...
4731 Coal
or...
3639 Gold
or...
5913 Silver
or...
4731 Coal
or...
3639 Gold
And don't forget all the money that comes with those ores!
Amount of Iron Ores x Price Each = Total Value
6758 x 200 = 1,351,600 GP! (Updated price here)
Amount of Silver x Price Each = Total Value
5913 x 300 = 1,773,900 GP! (Updated price here)
Amount of Coal x Price Each = Total Value
4731 x 250 = 1,182,750 GP! (Updated price here)
Amount of Gold x Price Each = Total Value
3639 x 315 = 1,146,285 GP! (Updated price hereAmount of Iron Ores x Price Each = Total Value

Whoa! So as you can see, the type of ore you decide to mine affects the amount of money you will be making. Mining iron can get you the least amount money, but it can ensure that you level up fast. Gold on the other hand might take a little longer to mine considering you need to be level 40 to start mining it, and the closest mine-to-bank for a Gold Mine is the crafting guild and Fally bank. In the end, the choice is all yours, pick which ever option suits you and get mining!
Level 60-85 Mining:
If you made it this far, then congratulations! You now have access to the mining guild! The mining guild is located south of the East Fally Bank, and is loaded with coal containing rocks. You can mine a ton of these rocks, and have easy access to the Falador Bank in which you can swiftly bank the ores.
This is the lengthiest process of training, as you will have to mine countless rocks in order to reach the ultimate goal for a miner: The ability to mine Runite Ores! Don't be discouraged though. Where there are lots of ores to be mined, there is lots of money to be made in the process! You can take the fast track and mine iron ores, or if you want to make a lot more money, mine coal ores in the Mining Guild.
To advance to level 85 mining, you will need to mine...
85,282 Iron Ores
or...
59,698 Coal Ores
Amount of Iron x Price Each = Total Value
85,282 x 200 = 17,056,400 GP! (Updated price here)
Amount of Coal x Price Each = Total Value
59,698 x 250 = 14,924,500 GP! (Updated price here)
or...
59,698 Coal Ores
And these ores will make you...
Amount of Iron x Price Each = Total Value
85,282 x 200 = 17,056,400 GP! (Updated price here)
Amount of Coal x Price Each = Total Value
59,698 x 250 = 14,924,500 GP! (Updated price here)
WOW! We are talking MILLIONS of GP and EXPERIENCE for about 8 days (straight) of work! That may seem like a long time but if you think about how much money you will get I think you will find that it pays off. And once you reach your training goal of level 85, you will be able to make even more!
Level 85+ Mining:
Now you've hit the BIG LEAGUES. All that hard work and training will immediately begin to pay off as you start mining Runite Ore. The Runite Ores are worth 17k each! So an inventory full can go for over 476k! I average 1.5 inventories of Runite Ores per hour, so that means over 700K per hour!! Happy mining and money-making from this point on!
For F2P, Runite Ores can be found deep in the 40+ Wilderness region. There is a lot less to fear now that you cannot be attacked by other players in the wilderness, however you do have to watch out for Revenants.

Shouldn't you go to the East Varrock bank to bank your ores?
And if you have high enough magic, teleporting to varrock will go much faster and you still make money.
For the part that goes from 60-85 why don't you got an equation for gold?
Just a little flaw on the level 15-40, you put the por miner going straigth trougth the evil wizards spot, anyone under level 40 of combat will be attacked, so put a map with the person just having to go north of the camp. Seriously, you are putting new players at danger, and dieing can really make people give up.
Btw theres no copper in the mine you said to go to.Its the other one that has the copper.
Yo i waz thinking couldnt u bank your runite ore in the bounty hunter bank? lol peace
Bubbly, it must be because mining gold is not good, as u get to use the mining guild. The travelling would make gold too time expensive. On the other hand, the mining guild is VERY close to the bank.
Great guide! Great website. The best ever. Now atleast i can make 400K without spending it immid9iately.=]
First this is the best site ever!!!! and second another good way to make a lot of mining is mine coal ore, next to hill gients, because no one is ever there and it is really fast!!!!
Just wanted to give a quick suggestion to people looking to train mining very quickly, the best way for exp per hour (sucks for money) is mining iron very quickly and banking then returning for more iron.
I think it is the absolute fastest mining xp for a free player... but I could be wrong ^_^
Anywho, Great job with the mining guide! I only wish there was a way to get more mining xp for iron/silver ores... they are my faves for xp/money... no1 buys silver anymore... i wonder why...?
Great guide but you guys mixed up the pictures for lvl 1-15 and lvl-15-40. The pictures of the map showing where the ores are.
please note that iron has recently went up, dwidling between 300-250gp each.
